Nonprofit Minding Our Business Launches Crowdfunding Campaign to Support Local Entrepreneurship Summer Program for Low-Income Middle Schoolers

Minding Our Business (MOB) has created and launched its first online “crowdfunding” campaign. With an initial goal of $10,000, the campaign will run until June 9th and support MOB’s popular entrepreneurship summer program for middle schoolers.

Lawrenceville, NJ – April 28, 2014 – Mercer County nonprofit Minding Our Business (MOB) has created and launched its first online “crowdfunding” campaign on Indiegogo. With an initial goal of $10,000, the campaign will run until June 9th and support MOB’s popular entrepreneurship summer program for low-income middle school students. The MOB Summer Program will be held on the campus of Rider University from June 25-August 31 this year. Detailed campaign information can be viewed at:  www.indiegogo.com/projects/minding-our-business-summer-program.

The Minding Our Business Summer Program: A Bridge to the Future for Low-Income Youth is an intensive, hands-on program providing 35 low-income middle school students with entrepreneurship training, motivation and mentoring. It also provides reading and math assistance to help facilitate student transitions from middle school to high school.

MOB Executive Director Kevin Wortham explains, “Crowdfunding is the process of pooling money from many different people to make an idea happen. Many people in the Mercer County community are passionate about helping local, at-risk youth succeed, and we want to tap into that passion by offering this easy way to support this year’s summer’s camp. MOB strengthens the vital educational foundation students receive in middle school — and introduces youth to the excitement and challenges of business and entrepreneurship! It contributes positively to the futures of our students, as well as the overall Trenton and Mercer County communities.”

The crowdfunding support will help MOB expand the length of this year’s program from its typical 15 days to 20 days, enabling students to master additional skills and achieve greater summer learning gains, a best practice suggested by the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA). The NSLA recognized MOB’s program as one of the top summer programs in the country in both 2008 and 2009.
